We have all read about people who are successful briefly. They win a gold medal, make a fortune, or star in one great movie and then disappear.…These examples do not inspire me!

My focus and fascination is with people who seem to do well in many areas of life, and do it over and over through a lifetime. In entertainment, I think of Paul Newman and Bill Cosby. In business, I think of Ben and Jerry (the ice cream moguls)…As a Naval Officer, husband, businessman, politician and now as a mediator and philanthropist on the world stage, Jimmy Carter has had a remarkable life. We all know examples of people who go from one success to another.

These are the people who inspire me! I’ve studied them, and I’ve noticed they have the following traits in common:

1. Repeatedly successful people respond instantly! When an investment isn’t working out, they sell. When they see an opportunity, they make the call. If an important relationship is cooling down, they take time to renew it. When technology or a new competitor or a change in the economic situation requires an adjustment, they are the first and quickest to respond.

2. They work hard! Yes, they play hard, too! They get up early, they rarely complain, they expect performance from others, but they expect extraordinary performance from themselves. Repeated, high-level success starts with a recognition that hard work pays off.

3. They are incredibly curious and eager to learn. They study, ask questions and read—constantly! An interesting point, however: While most of them did well in school, the difference is that they apply or take advantage of what they learn. Repeated success is not about memorizing facts, it’s about being able to take information and create, build, or apply it in new and important ways. Successful people want to learn everything about everything!

4. They network. They know lots of people, and they know lots of different kinds of people. They listen to friends, neighbors, co- workers and bartenders. They don’t have to be “the life of the party,” in fact many are quiet, even shy, but they value people and they value relationships. Successful people have a Rolodex full of people who value their friendship and return their calls.

5. They work on themselves and never quit! While the “over-night wonders” become arrogant and quickly disappear, really successful people work on their personality, their leadership skills, management skills, and every other detail of life. When a relationship or business deal goes sour, they assume they can learn from it and they expect to do better next time. Successful people don’t tolerate flaws; they fix them!

6. They are extraordinarily creative. They go around asking, “Why not?” They see new combinations, new possibilities, new opportunities and challenges where others see problems or limitations. They wake up in the middle of the night yelling, “I’ve got it!” They ask for advice, try things out, consult experts and amateurs, always looking for a better, faster, cheaper solution. Successful people create stuff!

7. They are self-reliant and take responsibility. Incredibly successful people don’t worry about blame, and they don’t waste time complaining. They make decisions and move on.…Extremely successful people take the initiative and accept the responsibilities of success.

8. They are usually relaxed and keep their perspective. Even in times of stress or turmoil, highly successful people keep their balance, they know the value of timing, humor, and patience. They rarely panic or make decisions on impulse. Unusually successful people breath easily, ask the right questions, and make sound decisions, even in a crisis.

9. Extremely successful people live in the present moment. They know that “Now” is the only time they can control. They have a “gift” for looking people in the eye, listening to what is being said, enjoying a meal or fine wine, music or playing with a child. They never seem rushed, and they get a lot done! They take full advantage of each day. Successful people don’t waste time, they use it!

10. They “look over the horizon” to see the future. They observe trends, notice changes, see shifts, and hear the nuances that others miss. A basketball player wearing Nikes is trivial, the neighbor kid wearing them is interesting, your own teenager demanding them is an investment opportunity! Extremely successful people live in the present, with one eye on the future!

These traits work together in combination, giving repeatedly successful people a huge advantage. Because they are insatiable learners, they can respond wisely to change. Because their personal relationships are strong, they have good advisors, and a reserve of goodwill when things go bad. And finally, none of these traits are genetic! They can be learned! They are free and they are skills you can use. Start now!

Honesty and Virtue are the two hardest things to maintain, and thus they are the two attributes that, when maintained, will catapult one to success faster than any other attributes.

I guess that everything that was writen here applys to life, not just business or money… Taking for example what Bill wrote below: “…but because my goal as a young man was to marry, have a family and do a good job raising them…”

    Lets take a look:

    1. Respond instantly: For example, if your kids are not doing well at school, do you wait untill they fail, or you try to help them instantly?… I guess I know your answer…

    2. They work hard: If you want to raise a family, you must work triple as hard. Marriage is not easy (I know it!!!), raising kids and doing a good job at it, is incredibly hard. And of course, you have to pay the bills… so you are a hard worker…

    3. They are curious: You have to do a lot of research and do a lot of questions if you want to be successfull while raising a family… If you want to grow your own garden, etc…

    4. They network: I’m sure you network a lot. You keep in touch with your kids teachers, you try to be related with friends who share your same vision and values and sure you like to know new people who share them to… so you network.

    5. They work on themselves and never quit: If you are divorced, you quit. If you don’t work for your kids and fight for them, you quit. If you don’t provide money to pay the bills, you quit. So, if you do all this, is because you NEVER QUIT.

    6.   They are creative: GOD!!! If you want to have a good marriage or try to have fun with your kids, you have to be VERY, VERY CREATIVE!!!!

    7. Take responsability: Raising a family is just for RESPONSIBLE people.

    8. Relax and think: That is what you always do if you don’t want to go crazy with your kids or your wife (or husband in case of women)!!!

    9. Live the present: That’s a “gift” when you think on your baby-kids. They grow so fast!!! If you don’t enjoy them while they are small, you will lose a lot of great stuff!!! If you don’t work on your marriage TODAY, I guaranty you that their is no FUTURE.

    10. They see the future: Every dad or mom in the world works hard today to provide a great future to its family. You want kids to go to college, etc… you are looking for thier future.

Bottomline… I don’t care how many people did you “studied” for writing this article… I just know that, AT LEAST, you have to follow this ten traits if you want to be successfull and achive your goals in your personal life. For some people is money, for others is family, and for other can be anything!!!

    Take care!!!

Firstly it depends on what you call success ,to some it could mean a lot of money to others it could be family and a great job. Successful people are not afraid of risk and a lot of successful people went bankrupt   P.T Barnum,  Walt Disney, Donald Trump  to name a few. I think the most important factor is that they believe in what they are doing 100% and have a bulldog determination to do whatever they set out to  do regardless of what other people may think

I am much more concerned with characteristics of entrepreneurs and successful people than I am with their accomplishments. I believe that if you do the right things and work hard, the results will follow. Sometimes, it can be hard to do this if you are in a startup, but you have to stay focused on your goals. Especially if business is plateauing and you need it to spike.

Without looking at the results it is hard for some people to determine if they are doing the right thing. I have an uncle who worked very hard and created a good product and process. It looked like things were going to go well for him. He ended up not focusing enough on the end result and he lost everything including his savings he built up over the previous 20 years.

9 and 10 are not contradictory at all. It is vision that helps you enjoy the present moment, roll with momentary annoyances while remaining happy and balanced. It is attention to the present moment that differentiates vision from fantasy.

There is no such a thing as multitasking. Numerous studies have shown we can only focus on one thing at a time. What we do is interrupt one task to go to another, and so on. One study found that doing several tasks this way takes up to 25% LONGER than doing the same tasks one after the other.

Roberto, your kinda wrong. Lets take cooking for instance.

My way: I’m going to put some pork chops in a skillet, start a pot of water for macaroni. Mom calls, I talk to her while stirring the macaroni. I open a can of green beans, put it in a pot, turn it on medium. Turn pork chops over. Strain macaroni threw colander, pour into bowl and add cheese, stir. Wash colander and macaroni pot. Stir beans, check on pork chops. Take 4 glasses from cupboard fill with ice, pour tea. Take pork chops out of skillet, take beans out of pan. put dishes into sink filled with water…..eat dinner……..Because we are all morons we’ll do this-Your way:  Cook pork chops, put on plate, cook macaroni, put in bowl, cook green beans, fill 4 glasses with ice and tea. Sit down to a cold meal because we didn’t want to interrupt one task to take on another.

Unless your version of multitasking is different from mine, please do no invite me to dinner, I like my food hot.

This whole thing reads like a horoscope from Women’s Weekly. Most of it is made up pseudo-inspirational nonsense and the rest falls squarely under the category of “DUH”! Of course successful people work hard that’s like saying comedians make people laugh. Barring random strokes of luck and lottery winners, no one has ever achieved “success” as the result of NOT working hard. Have you ever seen a square circle? Durr…

    1. Pure bullshit. Successful people do not always respond instantly, this is the type of advice for retards that makes me grit my teeth and remind myself punching the computer monitor will accomplish nothing. Successful people are generally good at logical ANALYSIS, they also tend to be smarter than you, and the needs of a given situation will determine the speed at which they respond. Some of the best decisions take years to mull over and some of the worst mistakes were made as the direct result of lack of forethought. Yorick is literally just making shit up here.

    2. Duh. No shit. Work hard for success. Got it. Play hard durka durka. See, some of the most successful people don’t play AT ALL. Some of the giants in business, industry titans, literally never take a minute off. But of course, it sounds better for the sake of blogging if we say “work hard play hard blargedy blarwarble” so whatever we’ll just go with that. The funny thing is that this isn’t necessarily true though. Some people accomplish “success” just so they can have the financial freedom to work the least amount possible.

    3. Ah yes, I read this in a fortune cookie once. Or a horoscope. My point is that this is something most people will look at and nod because it sounds like it makes sense, but isn’t necessarily the case. A lot of successful people aren’t curious about anything else but increasing profit margins. Many have tunnel vision and literally never give two shits about anything else outside their niche. And what is this crap about school; successful people actually apply what they learned in school? Is he implying that the rest of us cretins don’t actually apply the things we learn in school? The funny thing is, a great deal of “successful” people did awful in school or dropped out.

    4. Successful people network. Golly jeepers Yorick, how many successful people did you “study” to figure this one out? Everyone in business networks. I know a lot of unsuccessful people who network too, this doesn’t mean anything. At all. Next.

    5. Yorick seems to be operating on the “if it sounds good in a fortune cookie, I’ll just throw it in there” principle. Successful people are really good at self improvement. They learn from their mistakes. Who says that successful people ever improve at anything? Some of them figure out something that works and stick to it their whole lives. I was recently contracted by a company who’s been doing their inventory the same way for the last 6 decades. They literally have no interest in doing it any different, despite the fact that a dozen or so RF scanners and some decent WM software would improve their accuracy and save hundreds of hours in productivity on a monthly basis. They’re not interested because they don’t give a fuck. They hate change, they don’t embrace it, and this is a privately owned company growing at an exponential rate, and is unrivaled in their market.

    6. Yorick seems to be under the impression that successful people are like these artistic savants who go around finger painting stuff because we just can’t control our creative impulses! No, sorry, successful people are not like fucking Rainman or flying kites in lightning storms to research lightning for our next great discovery. This childish misconception comes straight from Hollywood. The vast majority of the most successful people I know and do business with, are also the most boring dullards you will ever come into contact with. They are the antithesis of creativity. While you were fingerpainting and eating glue, a lot of them weren’t doing anything more creative than saving up their lunch money for something useful while you were blowing yours on Mountain Dew and Pop Rocks. If anything, they are simply more PRACTICAL than you are.

    7. Successful people also whine and complain a lot, just like everyone else. When mistakes get made, they are just as likely to place blame, especially when there are dozens or sometimes hundreds of subordinates lower on the totem poll to take the blame with. They will all gladly accept responsibility for success, sometimes even yours, so watch your back.

    8. Successful people rarely have time to relax, stress is one of the biggest unfortunate byproducts of success.

    9. Living in the now is one of the most retarded new-age attempts at sloganeering I’ve ever heard. There’s no other moment for me to live in, so shut the fuck up and find something better to do with my time.

Wow you have missed the boat entirely.  You have so much time to complain that you have missed the message of steps to take that you can control.
Networking is critical but you seem to think it’s not necessary for example, but when you play hard in the leisure time, you network with such a variety of people that give you an encompassing perspective on different things as well as continuously learning.  This also allow you to relax and enjoy life at the same time.
It seems that you need to strive for success and apply some of these concepts in your life so that you learn the ability to relax.  Try change, change helps you success.  It’s not a myth.
Lastly, just because one of these instants wasn’t true for one person, does not make it false.  These are guidelines that are generally shared by MOST successful people.  You have such a pessimistic view on life that you will never get anything out of it, as you currently are now.

First and foremost, successful people like doing what they do. It’s not that success will come when you adopt a certain personality type or emulate certain behaviour patterns or routines – it may help to get there, yet success is the result of a burning desire, inspiration, an action plan (strategy, vision, concept) and commitment to follow through.
Nobody ever gets successful over night – even short lived fame is usually the result of long tedious preparation.

Hey Yorick! How about setting things up so we can print a post without having to print pages & pages of comments or do a copy & paste hack job? That will make it easier to keep the URL with your excellent writing.

@email … “successful” is not necessarily a synonym for “wealthy”. My Dad was highly successful but never more than moderately well-off. Last month he was buried 700 miles from where he had lived the past several years and STILL filled the funeral home to over-capacity for the sermon. That’s an awful lot of people who thought his life had value. The line to the cemetery was over a mile long. That’s the sort of respect given royalty.

I make even less money than he did, and I consider myself successful. Not because I have a network of friends like he did, but because my goal as a young man was to marry, have a family and do a good job raising them. I did that. My home and cars are paid for. I have a garden that gives me a lot of healthy food while helping to keep me ‘centered’ in a Zen sort of way.

Borrowing from Zig Ziglar (DAGS) “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” My ideals were worthy and I achieved them. That makes me a success.

If you measure your life by the money you have, you’ll always be either disappointed or arrogant. Measure instead by the positive impact you have on the world. If you evidence those ten traits, you -will- have a positive impact and you will be compensated from a hundred different directions … only some of which will look like money, but all of which will make you a wealthy human being.

@Ironman571: I think Carter’s greatest accomplishment was having American’s stand in line for gas on even odd days. Kinda like Obama’s insain gas prices… LOL

Jimmy Carter has distinguished himself by his accomplishments after his presidency. Though his accomplishments were many while in office, unfortunately, he will be know only for the Iran hostage incident. He is by far NOT the worst president. That honor is reserved for George W. Bush!

These traits may not be genetic, but I believe they have a lot to do with personality type. Take a look at MBTI personality types if you don’t know much about it.

So, in other words, the perfect human being?

In my opinion this list is more aspirational of the writer Ghana a pragmatic study of “successful” people.
And successful by what measure and how benchmarked?

Spurious and hokey to me, however, wish I was more successful :)
