Today I did something really funny. While I was standing on the corner of Robson and Hornby Street this, I believe American, woman came up to me and asked me for directions while she was on the phone. I told her, take the first one left, again left and another left turn. She thanked me and started walking. I stood there stunned that anyone could fall for the oldest trick in the book. Because left, left and left makes a circle :) . I quickly walked towards a hot dog stand waiting for her to appear around the final corner in order to complete the circle, too bad he didn’t have a chair and popcorn. After 8 minutes she showed up and halfway she realized something was wrong and she asked someone else for directions. Today I made somebody smile if only it was me :) . Absolutely funny. Forgot to take a picture though. Next time. Will probably pull the prank once more :) .

Bonus picture: right in front of my building the Dalai lama.

Well, the title says it all !. Being in Vancouver for a day looks like I was brought up here. People are friendly (has a lot to do with my location) and are willing to help you in any way (even the cops :) ). As you might have read before I live (rented an apartment through Craigslist.org) in Yaletown and this proved to be an excellent decision. Everything is around me; (grocery)shops, clubs, cafes, coffeeshops (of course not the Dutch ones though the ‘culture’ is the same), car rental, Granville Island, the water (very Dutch), the beach (right around the corner) and much more.

A few days ago I rented a Ford Mustang Convertible (hoping to get it, you know how it goes. I’ll probably end up with a Dacia Logan) which I will get this Wednesday to go to Vancouver Island for the weekend (my aunts live there). The funny thing is that I got it for 3 weeks for only 300CD. I was very happy (almost as happy when I got my first Sony). The drive promises to be amazing. A spectacular 3,5 hour drive (including the ferry) towards everyone’s favorite weekend destination; Gabriola Island.  Hope the cruisin’ goes well.

The other day some Chinese coño tried to sell me a prepaid sim-card for 117,50 CD at the Rogers shop on 1392 Robson Street in Vancouver. When I went to Wireless Wave they told me it’s nonsense that an activation fee of at least 100 CD applies. I soon realized I got f*****. After I bought the sim card at another location I went back to the Rogers store and told this Chinese take-away-burger-flippin-whore that I got the simcard from next door without paying that amount of money and that I worked for the VancouverSun (a newspaper based in Vancouver). Clearly I don’t work for them but she realized she did the wrong thing. I walked outside and said the wonderful phrase ‘have a nice day’ (same thing a cop says when he/she gives you a ticket). But this time I meant it :) .

Everytime a purchase is made they *all* ask me if I have a coupon, stupid coupons !. Felt like McCulkin in Home Alone 1 when he buys a toothbrush…….you have a coupon for that? Bloody hell.

After a stressful day in Vancouver I finally nailed it ! An excellent apartment in Downtown Vancouver in the area of Yaletown.

“Yaletown Known to many as Vancouver’s little Soho, Yaletown has experienced a revival in the past several years to emerge as downtown’s trendiest residential neighbourhood for urban professionals. Impeccably hip, Yaletown is brimming with quality restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. It is a neighbourhood to see-and-be-seen.”

Finally, I’m in Vancouver! After a 9,5 hour flight with strange people sitting next to me I begin my Canadian journey. Today (Sunday) it’s all about gathering information regarding mobile phones (and plans), getting a power converter (notebook has a ‘thick’ plug), going to get a cup of coffee (not at Starbucks but at Blenz), go for a walk (in the bloody rain) and ‘lining up’ properties. Found a few interesting ones through Craigslist.org and Rentersden.com.

Pictures and Videos will be added soon.

This Saturday (May 1st) I’ll fly out to Vancouver (also known as Vansterdam due to the similar drug culture, damn hippies). The purpose of a 3 month visit is all about doing business abroad (and starting/finalizing my thesis regarding the Canadian Online Banking industry in comparison to Europe and America with a smile towards the financial crisis). Let’s see whether I can start the ChrisBank before I graduate. Several interesting websites: viewsVancouver.
